TIER 2. HQ Machilipatnam. Machilipatnam revenue division. Formed 8 May 2023 by dividing the former Machilipatnam mandal. Covers 10 settlements including Machilipatnam municipal corporation wards 20-39. CAUTION: the page repeats the same 238,962 (2011) pre-split mandal total; no post-split population is recorded here. Former undivided Machilipatnam mandal: 2011 population 238,962, 28 villages + 1 town (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machilipatnam_mandal). | ALSO: TIER 2. HQ Machilipatnam. Machilipatnam revenue division. Formed 8 May 2023 by dividing the former Machilipatnam mandal. Covers 17 settlements plus Machilipatnam municipal corporation wards 1-19 and 40-50. CAUTION: the page repeats 238,962 (2011) - that is the PRE-SPLIT Machilipatnam mandal total, not this mandal's own population, so no post-split population is recorded here. | ALSO: Municipal Corporation and district headquarters of Krishna district. HISTORIC INTERNATIONAL PORT (Masulipatnam / Bandar). It was a trading post from the 3rd century BCE under the Satavahanas, Ikshvakus and Eastern Chalukyas, and appears in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea and in Ptolemy's Geography, which record large stocks of cottons and muslins in its market (https://www.wisdomlib.org/cities/machilipatnam-2798, medium confidence). Under the Golconda rulers in the 16th-17th centuries it exported chintz, calico and muslin and was the home of Machilipatnam kalamkari block printing, trading actively with the Dutch, French and English (https://indiaartreview.com/stories/book-extract-the-art-of-cloth-in-mughal-india-kalamkari/, medium confidence). This is the deepest documented mercantile history of any town in the region and the most likely early anchor for Vysya trading families in the Krishna delta. The Krishna district official endowments page lists the Panduranga Swamy Temple here but NO Kanyaka Parameswari temple (https://krishna.ap.gov.in/endowments/). | ALSO: TIER 1 + TIER 3. Municipal corporation - constituted a municipality in 1866, upgraded from special grade municipality to corporation on 9 December 2015. District headquarters of Krishna district. 2001 population 179,353 (population DECLINED). Confirmed as a municipality on the official district list https://krishna.ap.gov.in/public-utility-category/municipality/ . CONFLICT: the Wikipedia Machilipatnam infobox gives 232,000 for 2011, which is the urban agglomeration, not the town.
