Documented merchant port: 'Dutch people arrived in Narsapur in 1626. Narsapur was used as a port by the Dutch and ships and boats were built here.' A Portuguese trading centre operated in the 16th century and an English cloth factory at Madhavayapalem near Narsapur is recorded in Alexander Hamilton's 1727 account; 'the trade of the town has steadily declined since the abolition of the company's factory in 1827.' Handmade crochet lace-work remains a principal export industry.
