Municipality in Madanapalle revenue division. Transferred from Chittoor district to Annamayya district in the reorganisation. Recorded as a First Grade Municipality (1985) in the AP urban-local-body list and as upgraded to 2nd Grade with 31 wards on 11 August 2023 on the town page - sources conflict on grade. TIER 1. Mandal headquarters of Punganur mandal, Madanapalle revenue division. The Madras District Manual for North Arcot, Vol. II (1894), which then covered this tract, gives Punganur's population as 5,565, records a 'chatram (for Brahmans)', and states that 'A good deal of trade in the products of the zemindari is carried on, and once a year, in April, after the local festival in honour of Manikiardyaswami, which attracts great crowds, a large fair is held, when several thousand cattle are exposed for sale.'
