Shivamogga district (Vasavi Vidyalaya site)

Included chiefly as a pointer for follow-up: Rice's Vol. I records that the Nagarta sub-section 'Namadhari (15,428)' was 'mostly in Shimoga and Kadur Districts' - by far the largest Nagarta concentration in the old State - and that Shimoga District held the great majority of the Jaina (1,981) and the whole of the Sravaka (1,962) trading population, 'probably represent[ing] a very ancient trading community of those parts'. The Namadhari Nagarthas of Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru (old Kadur district) are a large, distinct Vaishya population that this pass could not research properly and that deserves a dedicated follow-up.
