Mandal headquarters, Palamaneru revenue division. The 1894 North Arcot Manual records a weekly fair here 'to which cattle of a superior breed are brought for sale' and names 'Sugar, tamarind, and gram' as the chief articles of export - a documented market town. The manual attributes the town's founding to a poligar, Venkatagiri Naidu, and does not attribute its trade to any particular merchant community.
