Named by the 1884 Dharwar Gazetteer as one of the two places where the district's 8,238 Komtis/Vaishyas were 'found chiefly' (the other being Navalgund), and separately as one of 'the leading trade centres, such as Hubli, Gadag, and Dhundshi' from which village shopkeepers bought their stock. No modern Arya Vysya institution in Gadag was located in the sources consulted.
