Municipality constituted in 1986, a third-grade municipality with 24 wards; 2011 census municipal population 33,732 and urban agglomeration 35,056. Yellandu was one of the taluks of the 1905 Warangal district. Coal was found in the Yellandu area and mining rights there were acquired in 1886 by the Hyderabad (Deccan) Company Limited, incorporated in England, whose assets passed in 1920 to the Singareni Collieries Company - the origin of the industrial rather than mercantile commerce of this sub-region.
