THE central Arya Vysya place in this region. Wikipedia: 'known as the birthplace of the goddess Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari'; the Government of Andhra Pradesh officially renamed the town Vasavi Penugonda on 31 December 2025. Penugonda was the capital of Kusuma Shresti, the Vaisya chief of the 18 paraganas under Chalukya rule in the 11th century CE, and the temple here is described as the 'Kasi of Vysyas'. Mandal headquarters of Penugonda mandal (14 villages, mandal population 69,857); town population 16,038 (Census 2011). About 15 km from Tanuku and 50 km from Rajahmundry.

Official West Godavari district government tourism page states verbatim: 'This Penugonda Kshetram is considered as the Kasi of Vysyas and is a holy place' for the community, and records Kusuma Sresti, a Setty king of the Vysyas also known as Pedda Setty ('elder among Settys'), as ruler of the territory in the 10th-11th centuries A.D. The temple has a seven-storied multi-coloured gali gopuram.
