Shivajinagar (Commercial Street / Jewellers Street quarter)

Shivajinagar is the old Civil and Military Station bazaar, which Rice's gazetteer counts separately from Bangalore City proper (population 100,081 in the Station versus 80,285 in the City in 1891). Rice records that of the Bangalore District trading classes the 161 Baniya were 'all in the Civil and Military Station of Bangalore' and that 'The Bale and Setti [Banajigas] are mostly in the Civil and Military Station'. The Jewellers Street / Ibrahim Sahib Street block carries the densest surviving Vysya institutional footprint in the Cantonment: a Nagareshwara-Kanyaka Parameshwari temple plus two Vysya choultries within about 200 metres. This is the best candidate in Bengaluru for a surviving Arya Vysya charitable complex.
